Valentine's Day DIY
We have the cutest little Valentine’s keepsake for you. We made these with kiddos ages 5 years and older, and the options for creating are endless! Keep reading below for the materials list and video tutorial.
Here’s what you’ll need:
watercolor paint (one color) + brush + cup to pour into
wooden heart or cardboard heart cutout
colored pencil (similar in color to your paint)
hair dryer
wire or string + beads
hot glue gun (optional) or heavy tape
The video below (video has no sound) shows the watercolor process, beginning with the palest wash of water with a drop of watercolor added. I began by drawing five hearts within my large heart shape. I painted around and behind those hearts with this pale pink wash. I then used a hair dryer to dry my painting. Then I drew the next five hearts again behind the first five. The I darkened my wash color with another drop of paint and painted behind this round of hearts. This process was repeated a few times, each subsequent round of paint becoming darker by adding a little more watercolor.
(Instructions continued below)
Once you’ve finished your hearts, and painted your wood or cardboard heart, it’s time to assemble. I used wavy edge scissors to cut my heart from the paper, ensuring it was a little smaller than my wood base. I added a few small scraps of cardboard as spacers between my heart shaped paper and my wood heart base to “pop” the painting forward. I adorned my lightest colored hearts with puffy paint and glued on small heart shapes. I finished the piece with a beaded hanger that was hot glued to the back.
